Saturn or a Brief Treatise on Melancholy movie details

Story without spoilers

The documentary observes a night-long vigil held during the winter solstice in Lagunas del Rosario. Around bonfires, participants pray, share ancestral stories and take part in a ceremony intended to ease physical and emotional suffering.

The gathering is also tied to the condition of the surrounding territory. Mendoza’s landscape has been ravaged by drought and the disappearance of its waters, giving the community’s spiritual practices a broader connection to a place under environmental strain. The film’s premise brings together individual healing, collective belief and the endurance of local traditions.

What to expect

This is a documentary grounded in ritual and community rather than a conventional fictional narrative. Its subject is a secretive solstice ceremony and the people who travel to it, with attention to prayer, ancestral memory, healing and the difficult environmental reality of an arid region.

The premise suggests a reflective film shaped by its setting and by the testimony of a community confronting both personal affliction and a changing landscape. The ceremony’s night-long structure provides the central framework, while Rubén Díaz’s role as healer places one individual at the center of the gathering.
