Green Grass is a 2026 drama short set around university life on England’s south coast. The 17-minute film follows Declan, a student struggling academically and socially, after his friends refuse to work with him on an assignment.

His only remaining partner is Claire, a new Deaf student whose ambition and pride in her identity sharply contrast with Declan’s lack of direction. Written and directed by Aram Atkinson, the film places their uneasy collaboration within a broader coming-of-age story about friendship, sustainability and D/deaf identity.

Green Grass movie details

Story without spoilers

Declan has earned a reputation as the university class coaster, leaving him without the support of his usual friends when a new assignment arrives. With no other option, he is paired with Claire, an academically driven student who is determined to assert her identity.

Their partnership creates the central tension of Green Grass. Against the setting of coastal university life in southern England, the story examines how academic pressure can expose fragile friendships while bringing questions of sustainability and identity into the pair’s shared experience.

What to expect

As a short drama, Green Grass presents its ideas through a focused university-based premise rather than an expansive storyline. Viewers can expect a coming-of-age narrative centered on an unlikely student partnership, with its subject matter including strained friendships, sustainability and D/deaf identity.

The film’s 17-minute runtime suggests a compact treatment of Declan and Claire’s situation. Its setting, character contrast and assignment-driven conflict provide the framework for a story about two students whose differences shape how they approach working together.
