Prepared by Movies Dock Editorial

Set against the frozen lakes of Ladakh, Birds on Ice follows Tashi, a young girl determined to play ice hockey despite her family’s financial struggles. While she waits for her parents, she also faces the changing lives of her grandfather and closest friend in this Tibetan-language Indian drama.

Birds on Ice is a 2026 Indian drama set in Ladakh, where winter transforms a frozen lake into an improvised training ground for children learning ice hockey. At its center is Tashi, a young player whose enthusiasm for the sport is challenged by circumstances beyond her control.

The film places Tashi’s sporting ambition alongside a period of uncertainty at home. Her parents are away, her grandfather is growing older, and her best friend is preparing to leave, giving the story a personal setting shaped by distance, change and limited resources.

Story without spoilers

During winter in Ladakh, a high-altitude region of the Himalayas, children train for ice hockey on a frozen lake. Tashi is especially passionate about the game, but her family cannot afford to buy her skates, creating an immediate obstacle to her ambitions.

As she waits for the return of her nomadic parents, Tashi’s world is also changing in other ways. Her grandfather is aging, while her best friend is getting ready to move away. The film follows these pressures through Tashi’s connection to ice hockey and the people closest to her, without reducing her story to sport alone.

What to expect

Birds on Ice is presented as a grounded drama built around a young girl’s love of ice hockey and the realities of life in Ladakh. The premise combines a distinctive winter setting with family separation, financial hardship, aging and the possibility of friendship changing through relocation.

The frozen lake serves as the film’s central sporting environment, while the Tibetan-language setting connects the story to its Indian Himalayan context. Viewers can expect a character-focused account of determination and uncertainty rather than a conventional sports-only narrative.
