The Last Frontier

🎬 Title: The Last Frontier / Подольские курсанты

They fought for Moscow

Story: The story of the Podolsk cadets’ heroic stand outside Moscow in October 1941. Cadets were sent to the Ilyinsky line, fighting alongside units from the Soviet 43rd Army to hold back the German advance until reinforcements arrived. Hopelessly outnumbered, young men laid down their lives in a battle lasting almost two weeks to obstruct the far superior German forces advancing towards Moscow. Around 3,500 cadets and their commanding officers were sent to hold up the last line of defense outside Moscow. Most of them remained there for eternity.

Editor’s note: Here’s a quick take on The Last Frontier (2020): Firmly a War, Drama, History piece, but with a personal touch. Vadim Shmelyov keeps the storytelling tight, favoring character beats over empty flash. Performances (especially Aleksey Bardukov, Evgeniy Dyatlov, Sergei Bezrukov) give the story human stakes. The 2h 10m runtime suits the material; scenes land without dragging. A respectable mid-tier entry with a couple of memorable beats. The marketing line “They fought for Moscow” isn’t just flair; it’s fairly accurate. Put it on your list—especially if you’re after mood and texture.
