Editor’s note: Our short take on Soul (2020): It leans into its Animation, Family, Comedy, Fantasy, Drama roots without feeling derivative. Under Pete Docter’s direction, the film keeps a steady rhythm and a clear sense of place. Performances (especially Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Graham Norton) give the story human stakes. The 1h 41m runtime suits the material; scenes land without dragging. Strong viewer reception suggests it’s a safe pick if the premise clicks. Its tagline — “Everybody has a soul. Joe Gardner is about to find his.” — actually reflects the film’s intent. Put it on your list—especially if you’re after mood and texture.
