Story: Set in Germany during the late 1990s, “Schlamassel” follows Johanna, a newspaper intern grappling with her grandmother’s death. As she navigates her grief, Johanna finds herself at odds with her family, particularly after a heated exchange with her uncle over inheritance at the funeral. In an effort to regain control, she immerses herself in her journalism. Along the way, she discovers an old photograph of Anneliese Deckert, a former concentration camp guard. This revelation propels Johanna to track down the 80-year-old woman, leading to unexpected encounters with her family and an unforeseen stir caused by the photo.
