Editor’s note: A quick note on Maixabel (2021): This film is a thoughtful drama that emphasizes emotional depth over sensationalism. Under the direction of Icíar Bollaín, it maintains a consistent pace and evocative sense of setting. The performances, particularly by Blanca Portillo, Luis Tosar, and Urko Olazábal, imbue the narrative with significant emotional stakes. Stretching to 1 hour and 55 minutes, the film holds a deliberate tempo, never lingering unnecessarily. Although it has a few imperfections, its merits far outweigh its flaws.
