Story: At just 26, photographer Anja Niedringhaus arrived in Sarajevo in 1992 to cover the harrowing realities of war. The environment was brutally cold, with no electricity, scarce food supplies, and the constant threat of danger looming over everyone. Under the guidance of Spanish photographer Sergio, she learned essential survival skills in a conflict zone. Anja’s reporting continued for nearly three years, which included stints in Kosovo and Afghanistan. In 2001, she joined the prestigious Associated Press, where her powerful images frequently graced the front pages of major global publications. Her groundbreaking work from Iraq earned her a Pulitzer Prize in 2005. While in Kabul, she forged a strong partnership with Kathy Gannon, the AP’s chief correspondent. Tragically, their bond was tested during a devastating attack during the Afghan presidential elections in 2014.
