Prepared by Movies Dock Editorial

El pintor de los milagros follows Francisco, a journalist investigating the origins of the revered Black Christ mural while his daughter remains in a coma. His research leads to the story of an enslaved young artist in 17th-century Peru, linking historical suffering with faith, resilience and redemption.

El pintor de los milagros is a Peruvian drama built around two connected stories: a journalist facing a devastating family crisis and the historical mystery surrounding the Black Christ mural. The film places Francisco’s search for answers alongside the account of the young enslaved man who created the image centuries earlier.

Directed and co-written by Alex Hidalgo, the film explores faith, suffering and the possibility of renewed hope through a story that moves between contemporary investigation and 17th-century Peru.

Story without spoilers

After an accident leaves his daughter in a coma, experienced journalist Francisco accepts an assignment to investigate the origins of an ancient mural of the Black Christ, an image venerated by millions. What initially appears to be a relatively small piece of reporting leads him to Santiago, who shares the hidden history of the mural’s creator.

Known only as “The Painter,” the young man was enslaved in 17th-century Peru and endured discrimination and suffering. Through his art, he transforms that pain into a Black Christ that would eventually become a major symbol of faith in the nation and one of the world’s most venerated religious images. As Francisco reconstructs this history, the investigation begins to affect his own understanding of belief and hope.
