À minuit les enfants s'éteignent is a 2026 French short film set in a secluded seaside hamlet during the middle of summer. Its story centers on Ambre, a young woman approaching her 18th birthday while preparing for a union dictated by the customs of her Caribbean community.

The film places Ambre at a turning point: she has not come out as lesbian, and only 24 hours remain before she is expected to formalize her engagement to David. The arrival of Adrielle disrupts that carefully defined future and sets the story in motion.

Story without spoilers

At midnight, a church bell marks the beginning of Ambre’s final day before her 18th birthday. She is betrothed to David, a union required by the traditions of her Caribbean community, while privately carrying a truth she has not yet shared.

As Ambre moves through this compressed period, Adrielle arrives in the seaside hamlet. Her presence unsettles Ambre’s assumptions and forces her to confront the conflict between communal expectations and the life she may want for herself.
