Prepared by Movies Dock Editorial

Über Unterbiberger follows trumpeter and teacher Franz Himpsl, his wife Irene, and their sons as the Unterbiberger Hofmusik carries Bavarian folk traditions into jazz and international musical encounters. From Morocco and Egypt to Iran and the Bavarian Forest, the documentary traces a family shaped by movement, collaboration, and a distinctive musical outlook.

Über Unterbiberger is a 2026 documentary about Franz Himpsl, the founder of the Unterbiberger Hofmusik, and the family ensemble built around him. A trumpeter, teacher, athlete, and self-described chaotic spirit, Himpsl brings Bavarian folk music into conversation with jazz and sounds from beyond Germany.

Directed by Matthias Ditscherlein, the 92-minute film follows the group across several international locations while also returning to Himpsl’s roots in the Bavarian Forest. Its focus is a musical family whose work is defined by openness, travel, and a willingness to cross traditional boundaries.

Story without spoilers

The documentary centers on Franz Himpsl and the Unterbiberger Hofmusik, the ensemble he founded. Alongside his wife Irene and their sons Xaver, Ludwig, and Franz Jr., Himpsl challenges fixed ideas about Bavarian folk music by combining it with jazz and influences from around the world.

The film accompanies the family on musical journeys through Marrakesh, the pyramids, Alexandria, and the Nile, as well as into the skies above Iran. At the same time, it follows Franz Himpsl back to the “Woid,” the deepest part of the Bavarian Forest, connecting the ensemble’s international travels with its founder’s local roots.
