Self-Return to Crimea movie

🎬 Title: Self-Return to Crimea / Самоповернення в Крим

Story: What challenges did the Crimean Tatars face upon their return to Crimea after long years of exile in the late 1980s? They had to advocate for fundamental rights such as purchasing property and obtaining residency permits, without which employment opportunities were virtually nonexistent. These were hard-fought battles, marked by relentless protests and negotiations with local authorities amid daily experiences of overt racism. The government-controlled media bombarded citizens with misleading narratives. Yet, the determination of the community—evident through protests from Moscow to Taman, petitions, peaceful demonstrations, acts of self-immolation, and grassroots efforts to reclaim land labeled as “squatting”—eventually bore fruit. This documentary chronicles the triumphant journey of a people reclaiming their home, representing a powerful narrative of resilience and unity against systemic oppression. Tragically, many faced the loss of their homes again following Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014. The film highlights the voices of Crimean Tatar movement veterans and those who have immigrated, portraying them as the key figures of this poignant story.
