Story: Thomas Brasch, a German-Jewish immigrant, moved to the nascent GDR with his family in the early 1950s after being born in England. His father, Horst, has a strong ambition to help shape the new German state. However, Thomas is drawn to the world of writing, discovering his identity as a poetic rebel. His debut play faces censorship, and he subsequently loses his spot at film school. In 1968, amidst the Soviet invasion of Prague, Thomas, along with his girlfriend Sanda and fellow students, attempts to incite protests in Berlin, but their efforts are thwarted. Tragically, his own father betrays him to the Stasi, resulting in Thomas’s imprisonment. After his release, he pursues poetry focused on themes of love, rebellion, and mortality. Yet, in the GDR, such an individual is heavily marginalized.
