🎬 Title: Lumumba, Return of a Hero / Lumumba, le retour d’un héros
Story: Over six decades since his assassination, Patrice Lumumba makes a poignant return to his homeland. As one of his children remarked, “Congo returns to Congo.” Lumumba was a visionary nationalist leader dedicated to channeling his nation’s immense resources for the welfare of its citizens. He marked a historic milestone by becoming the first Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo on June 30, 1960, right after the nation gained independence from 80 years of Belgian colonial dominance. Sadly, just seven months later, he was assassinated in Katanga province alongside two pivotal political allies, Joseph Okito and Maurice Mpolo. Their remains were disposed of in sulfuric acid, leaving behind only a single tooth of Lumumba, which a police commissioner secretly preserved until his passing in 2000. Lumumba’s murder paved the way for the rise of dictator Mobutu, who maintained his regime until 1997, largely supported by Western powers.
